Top Things to Do in Lakka, Paxos

Lakka is one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the Ionian — a horseshoe-shaped bay lined with pastel houses, sailing yachts and waterfront tavernas. It's the village where Hotel Bastas is based, and it's also the perfect starting point for exploring everything Paxos has to offer.

Whether you have a few hours or a full week, here's our guide to the best things to do in and around Lakka.

1. Wander the Lakka Waterfront

Best for: An easy first evening, people-watching, sunset drinks

Start simple — Lakka's harbour is made for slow strolls. Yachts and sailing boats from all over Europe moor along the quay in summer, and the string of tavernas and cafés facing the water is perfect for a leisurely dinner or a sundowner as the light turns gold over the bay.

📍 Distance from Hotel Bastas: In the village — 5–10 min on foot.

2. Walk to the Lakka Lighthouse

Best for: Sunset views, an easy walk, photography

A scenic path leads from the village out to the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula, with sweeping views back over the bay and out to the open Ionian Sea. It's a gentle walk suitable for most fitness levels, and one of the best spots on the island to watch the sunset.

📍 Distance from Hotel Bastas: ~2 km — approx. 30–40 min on foot.

3. Visit the Twin-Domed Church of Ypapanti

Best for: History, architecture, a quiet detour

Tucked away in a remote corner of the island, this unusual twin-domed church dates back to around 1600 and is one of the most distinctive pieces of religious architecture on Paxos. It's a peaceful spot, well worth the short detour for anyone interested in local history.

📍 Distance from Hotel Bastas: ~5 km — approx. 15 min by car.

4. Take a Boat Trip to the Sea Caves & Antipaxos

Best for: The ultimate Paxos day out, swimming, snorkelling

No visit to Paxos is complete without exploring its famous sea caves by boat — dramatic rock formations and hidden coves accessible only from the water. Most trips continue on to Antipaxos, combining the caves with a swim stop at Voutoumi or Vrika beach.

5. Explore Gaios, the Island's Capital

Best for: Shopping, dining, a change of scenery

Gaios is a picturesque harbour town with a distinctly Venetian character — narrow lanes, neoclassical buildings and a bustling waterfront protected by the small islands of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia. It's a lovely spot for an afternoon of wandering, shopping and people-watching.

📍 Distance from Hotel Bastas: ~10 km — approx. 20 min by car.

6. Stroll Through Loggos Village

Best for: A quieter alternative, waterfront dining

Smaller and quieter than Gaios, Loggos is a charming fishing village built around a tiny harbour, with a handful of excellent tavernas right on the water. Combine it with a visit to nearby Levrechio beach for a relaxed half-day out.

📍 Distance from Hotel Bastas: ~5–6 km — approx. 10 min by car.

7. Discover the Paxos Folklore Museum

Best for: Rainy days, culture, local history

Housed in a traditional building, the Paxos Folklore Museum offers a glimpse into island life of the past, with displays of everyday objects, tools and traditional costumes. A quick, worthwhile stop for anyone curious about the island's heritage.

📍 Distance from Hotel Bastas: ~9 km — approx. 20 min by car.

8. Drive Through the Olive Groves

Best for: Scenic drives, photography, exploring at your own pace

Paxos is covered in centuries-old olive groves, and the winding roads that cut through them make for some of the most beautiful drives on the island. Hire a car for the day and take your time — there's a new view around every bend.
